Breastmilk:

Color, density & hue of each Mother’s milk is different. some breastmilk contains more protein which makes the milk whiter & gives your breastmilk stone a brighter, whiter color. Some milk has a higher fat content, giving it a richer quality & lending your piece a creamier appearance.
If your milk is more watery, it may yield a stone with a lighter, more translucent look. Lastly, if the milk is high in sugar, the breastmilk stone might look denser & more opaque.

The composition of your breastmilk also depends on the particular stage of your breastfeeding journey. When you first produce milk for your newborn, your milk is high in fat & protein. As your baby grows, the composition of your milk changes with your baby’s changing needs. As you introduce solid foods, your breastmilk becomes more watery, containing less protein. Even during a single feeding, the earlier milk is a little more watery compared to the milk that comes a few minutes later when it’s more richer in protein.

Interesting Fact: In a sense this allows your baby to ‘drink’ before they ‘eat’.

Preserving Process: Turning Breastmilk Into Powder

The first step in creating your breastmilk jewelry piece is curing your milk & turning it into a fine, dry powder. Only 5 ml of breastmilk is needed & combined with this, our ‘magic’ breastmilk preservation powder. This process helps to inhibit enzymatic activity & prevent bacterial & fungal growth. This then creates a breastmilk ‘paste’ which is then dried over a course of 24-48, sometimes even 72 hours. This drying step is a critical in the preserving process of keeping your milk bacteria free.

After curing & drying each breastmilk, we turn it into a powder that reflects the same hues & colors as the original milk. This is why every breastmilk stone varies in color & hue or shade of white. All these little variations are what makes your breastmilk jewelry so unique & personal.

We then infuse resin with your breastmilk powder which creates each beautiful stone made for your keepsake jewelry. At this stage, inclusions are also added like different shimmers & sparkles, crystal birthstones, a lock of your little one’s hair, umbilical cord, dried placenta & more.

Adding Inclusions:

Inclusions are little things you can add to your breastmilk jewelry stone to further personalize your keepsake. Inclusions can be combined together or simply one can be used. If you prefer to keep things neutral, a more natural breastmilk stone with no inclusions might be the best for you.

Gold + Rose Gold Flakes

Opal Flakes (milky opal appearance, this effect plays on soft flecks of color & when seen in sunlight, highlights of that particular opal will shine through. Gorgeous pastel tones shimmer)

Pearl Shimmer (beautiful milky pearl like stone, giving a subtle but shimmery look to your milk stone. This is a popular option if you are wanting to add a slight shimmer, but natural look to your breastmilk without taking away from the authenticity of the breastmilk stone itself.

Since only a small portion of your milk powder is used when creating your breastmilk stone, we carefully store the rest in sealed, labeled containers in case you would ever like to have any additional pieces created in the future without having to send more breastmilk.

It then takes on average around 48-72 hours for your breastmilk stone to fully cure & harden. During this time, your stone is also inspected for quality & cured with a UV protective coating.

This is where it starts to get exciting… Setting your finished stone into your jewelry piece. Once your finished jewelry piece is inspected one last time, your beautiful breastmilk keepsake will be ready to get packaged & sent finally on its way to you.

How to care for your breastmilk Jewelry:

As with any piece of fine jewelry, it is important to properly care for your breastmilk jewelry. We encourage everyone to store your jewelry in our jewelry box provided to you with your order or another jewelry box you currently have. Always keep your jewelry stored in a dark, cool place & avoid direct sunlight. Try to least expose your jewelry to extreme temperature fluctuations or chemicals & always remove your jewelry if tanning or using a sauna. We recommend removing your breastmilk jewelry before bathing, showering, swimming, washing your hands, applying hand sanitizer or other creams/gels. These certain chemicals in pools, soaps & topicals can dull your breastmilk stone over time.

Be careful to avoid potentially scratching your stone on sharp edges or surfaces. Simply, be mindful of your jewelry when handling abrasive items.

Cleaning Your Breastmilk Jewelry:

Cleaning your jewelry is just as important when it comes to the care & handling of your keepsakes. The silver cloth cleaner that comes with every piece is designed to shine your jewelry & make it sparkle! Our cloths are delicate on your jewelry & will help keep them beautiful & long lasting. Polishing your stone will restore its shine.
